The Mattress Makers Story

SOME PEOPLE WERE BORN TO BE CERTAIN THINGS IN LIFE, SUCH AS DOCTORS, PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, ENGINEERS…

Well, you could say we were born to be in the mattress business; a journey that began before we were actually born. It started in the 60's when our grandpa started a small mattress factory near downtown San Diego. These were the good ol days in the mattress industry when natural materials were naturally used. Before the gels, memory foams, air beds, “no flip” and "bed in a box" mattresses gimmicks.

MATTRESSES BUILT TO LAST

Our dad took over the mattress factory in 1984. His goal had always been to build a mattress that would feel as comfortable and supportive on day three thousand as it did on day one. His philosophy and approach to building mattresses has always been, "better materials make a better mattress", and, "Less is More" in mattress design.

FAST FORWARD SEVERAL YEARS

As a teenager, I, (Pablo), grew up working in the mattress factory and learning the mattress making trade. However, I had no idea how to run a retail store, so I ended up landing a job at the largest mattress retailer in San Diego, and was able to learn the retail side of the business. This learning experience proved to be priceless. But I saw a side to the mattress industry which shined a light on why the mattress industry has had such a bad reputation, and why people dislike mattress shopping so much. There's a lot of games played within mainstream mattress stores. And the pressure to buy a mattress is almost like walking into a used car lot.                  I HATED IT.

WHY WE CHOSE NATURAL MATERIALS

While working at this other mattress store, I ended up purchasing a rather well known and expensive memory foam mattress, (which shall remain nameless). The week we got this new mattress delivered was the same week we had brought our newborn baby home.

I can not begin to tell you how bad the chemical smell was when we opened up the packaging. As new parents, the last thing we wanted was for our newborn infant to breathe in those harmful chemicals, so shortly after receiving the mattress and trying to let it air out, (to no avail), we chucked it.

After getting rid of that mattress I quit my job and started Mattress Makers. We started Mattress Makers with the goal of providing the best mattress shopping experience EVER, and providing San Diego with the highest quality mattresses at fair prices, without the harmful chemicals of typical mattresses.
